PRESS STATEMENT BY YB DATO’ SRI LIOW TIONG LAI
MINISTER OF TRANSPORT & PRESIDENT OF MCA

Liow: A Barisan Nasional Government for The Malaysian Labour Force

Happy Labour Day to the collective workforce of Malaysia. Whether in the public or private sector, across every industry, you are the irreplaceable backbone of our beloved nation and the rock upon which our economy has been able to achieve growth.

Despite the challenges and global headwinds our nation has faced over the years, we have remained a stable presence within the region. More importantly, even as economic volatility plagued many countries worldwide, Malaysia demonstrated resilience in weathering these uncertainties. As testament to this, our nation’s full-year Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 5.9% in 2017, and is projected to continue on this growth trajectory in the coming year.

Indeed, this positive growth must be attributed at least in part to the hard work and dedication of the Rakyat. Each of you, regardless of age, background, race or creed, have contributed in your own way towards spurring our tanah air to greater heights, well on track to achieve not only developed nation status, but also realising our TN50 vision of being a global leader in economic development, citizen well-being and innovation.

Looking ahead, your Barisan Nasional Government remains as deeply committed as ever to supporting and prioritising the needs of the workforce, from enhancing quality of life to increasing disposable income.

As we approach the 14th General Elections, MCA has outlined many key areas within our manifesto to support businesses and leverage on fresh opportunities brought about by the onset of a digital economy. In this era of rapid innovation, adaptability is increasingly vital in order to thrive. MCA has pledged to assist small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs), to allow them the opportunity to ride on this wave of e-commerce. In tandem, we are also focused on enhancing vocational skills and training through the VTAR Institute, creating a generation of skilled young talents who will remain equally competitive in this digital age.

I, along with my fellow colleagues in BN and MCA, are ready and eager to continue doing our part to represent the communities across Malaysia. Let us come together once again in the spirit of moderation and togetherness, and ensure a bright future for all.

May this well-deserved holiday be an enjoyable, peaceful and restful one for you. To those who are travelling, drive safe.
